The Aliens Are Coming...The Aliens Are Coming...
Honestly, this film was confusing from beginning to end. It immediately began with these oblong ships appearing all around the world. But how? That was never revealed or shown, adding something to the film.
The film follows Amy Adams; an expert in languages who's recruited by Forest Whitaker to help them communicate with these unknown beings.
So, you watch and follow as the helicopter lands a few miles away from the craft, that's eerily hovering off the ground.
Once suited up and at the base of the craft, a door opens. How did they know it would open and where? That wasn't explained. Entering the craft, gravity was sideways (literally) leading down a long corridor toward a large window revealing nothing but fog or mist.
I was surprised this film wasn't based in a supermarket if the beings dwell in this...fog or mist. Nothing against 2007's THE MIST for I thought it was a good movie.
Now as the movie moves further into its first hour, Adams attempts to communicate with whatever's on the other side of the window.
Sigh.
Somehow this film felt too much like 1996's THE ARRIVAL with a young Charlie Sheen and/or 2008's THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL with the fantastic Keanu Reeves. You know, aliens coming to Earth causing havoc and panic and with a scientist trying to communicate. YAWN.
Now, the aliens, once they made themselves somewhat seen, were nothing more than speechless squid or Octopus-like beings, spitting their ink to speak.
I was just waiting for them to verbally say,
"Aw...you humans made me ink." but no luck.
The film was a total bore, honestly, but because I like Adams, Renner and Whitaker, I gave it a chance. I mean, nothing really exciting happened, leaving you with that "WOW, GREAT FILM" feeling. At least not for me and I can't speak for everyone.
The big thing that confused me, were these visions Adams kept having. Were they part of her past, or her future? The aliens revealed that she had the ability to see into the future, but was what the idea of the visions? I don't know because that was never specified.
Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker are all amazing and talented actors, but this film presented dull and flat acting. I'm sorry guys, I really am but it's true. Adams should stick with comedy. Renner is a great ass-kicking action star and Whitaker is a variety actor. But as I said, this film was boring despite the cast.
The sound the Octo-squids made, terrified my poor babies for they all ran around the house; ears perked and tails between their legs, trying to find a place to hide. Honestly, I didn't like the sound either, so at least they got that part right with the eerie and creepy sound effects. All the same, definitely not the greatest Scifi-alien film I've seen.
Anyway, this Sci-fi film ARRIVAL (2016) sadly gets a rating of 2 and a half stars.
